Meet Olivia Dean: Your Best New Artist of 2026

As we are just past the halfway mark in 2026 there already has been a plethora of new rising talent. However, Olivia Dean has been a standout name.

She emerged not just as a promising newcomer but as one of the defining voices of the new musical generation. With a unique blend of soulful pop, introspective songwriting, and cultural resonance, Dean’s rapid ascent in the global music scene makes her one of the most compelling new artists of the year. With her first album, Messy, releasing in 2023 and her most recent project, The Art of Loving, releasing in 2025 her journey has been anything but overnight. Growing up in London, she developed her musicality through persistence. She switched from acting to singing at 15. From a young age she taught herself guitar, piano, and how to write songs. She performed whenever  she could to sharpen her voice and stage presence.

Olivia Dean got her initial start at the prestigious BRIT School for performing and creative arts in London where other famous artists like Amy Winehouse also studied. Eventually at 17 she landed her first big gig as a backup singer in the band Rudimental. Those early years were formative as they shaped the warmth in her conversational tone. They also gave her exposure to bigger stages as she joined Rudimental when they played the Sziget Festival in Hungary. Before her big break, she focused on building a steady foundation rather than rushing to mainstream media. In 2018, she independently released her first single, “Reason to Stay” and this got the attention of AMF Records which signed her in 2019.  By the time she began gaining wider attention, Dean already possessed the poise of a seasoned performer. Her early work revealed a young songwriter deeply influenced by soul, jazz, and classic British pop, but still unafraid to frame those influences through a modern lens.

As streaming numbers climbed and audiences grew larger, it became clear that this wasn’t a brief surge; it was the result of years of quiet development finally reaching critical mass. In 2023, her debut album, Messy, was nominated for the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize. Then, in September 2025, Dean released her sophomore album, The Art of Loving.  This release marked a pivotal turning point in her career, making her skyrocket to global fame.  Rather than playing it safe, she pushed her limits, embracing fuller arrangements, layered harmonies, and more expansive production while maintaining the intimacy that fans had come to cherish. Critically, the album demonstrated a maturity beyond her years. Reviewers praised its cohesion and emotional nuance. Commercially, it solidified her crossover appeal, drawing listeners from pop, R&B, and even indie spaces into the same orbit. Shortly after its release, Dean became the first female solo artist to have four songs simultaneously on the UK Top 10 Singles chart in history ("Man I Need," "Nice to Each Other," "So Easy (To Fall in Love)," and the Sam Fender collaboration "Rein Me In"). Award recognition further solidified Olivia Dean’s arrival as a major force in the music industry. She won the award of Best New Artist at the 2026 Grammys along with British Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and British Artist of the Year at the 2026 Brit Awards. These industry nominations signaled that her peers and critics alike recognized her artistry, not just her popularity.

In award ceremonies often dominated by spectacle, Dean’s presence felt sincere, a true reflection of her approach to music itself. Her acceptance speeches, interviews, and performances emphasized gratitude, heritage, and community rather than self-congratulation, deepening public admiration. Winning and being nominated alongside established global names placed her in a new category of relevance. It showed that her impact extends beyond streaming numbers and into the broader cultural conversation about where contemporary pop and soul are headed. If studio recordings reveal Dean’s precision, her live performances reveal her heart. As she expanded into larger venues and international dates, audiences quickly discovered that her voice carries even greater warmth and control in person. Instead of relying on elaborate theatrics, she commands attention through vocal clarity and emotional honesty. Touring has also amplified her global reach. Dean just wrapped up her tour across Europe and is currently on her North American run. During this tour she sold out major venues such as multiple nights at the O2 and Madison Square Garden. Soon, she will headline Lollapalooza Chicago 2026; one of the largest festivals in the world. Love, doubt, ambition, and self-acceptance are universal themes, and she articulates them in ways that feel personal yet widely relatable.
